Bob Jones’ reply

Blue…I do hope this( Norton System) as described by Glen does the trick ..so you fight this ..I will be waiting for your next report on this new treatment of attacking the cells.. I have read on some of those new treatments in which the thinking of using the immune system to attack the cancer cells. .Australia has a big say in these trails as I think from memory it was started from Brisbane ? Anyway mate all the best with treatment and I will wait for your next report …Just remember Norton has been around for a long time and it was very successful.. Bob Jones

Latest update from Blue Hickey

Hi to every one out there, I am sorry for the brevity of my update, but as most of you know I am a man of a few words.
Glen, to keep me out of trouble this time I thought I would get a head of you with the up date, I have been on the go with appointments here there and every where lately and tomorrow, Friday 6 August, is my last radiation treatment on the cancer that recently decided to move into my pelvis.
Next week is the start of a new era for me, as on Monday I have to go into Greenslopes for educational lectures on cancer.
On Thursday morning I start on a new treatment, not chemo but you may have heard or read about a system called, ‘ KEYTRUDA”.
With what I have been told, and from what I have read, this is my understanding of the new treatment;

What it does is work with your immune system to help fight Melanomas.
I previously may have mentioned that I had a melanoma on my head that was unable to be treated by chemotherapy as It didn’t have a “T” cell in it.
From what I can understand, normally a cancer cell can change its identity, so it can change to say, a bone cell, so the immune system can’t identify it so it goes merrily on its way into the bone.
But with KEYTRUDA it finds the disguised cancer cells and opens them so your immune system can identify them start destroying them.

Note from your friendly editor;

We (Dongers, Patsy and I) called round a week or two back and although Blue is now on a walking stick (He says it makes him look more distinguished) both he and Helen were looking pretty bright and in good spirits.
Sounds like you have uploaded a “Norton anti virus programme” or something similar Blue. Lets all hope that this is as successful as it sounds it could be.

REUNION INFORMATION

I have just confirmed the dates with the Bowling Club re our 50th Anniversary reunion. The Meet & Greet is on Friday{ PM} 19th August 2016. The 50 th Anniversary Dinner (PM) Saturday 20th, and the General Meeting on Sunday (AM) 21st.
The format is the same as previous reunions.
I have checked out a couple of other accommodation places that are across the road from the Bowlo for those people needing to be closer to the venue.
The Sandcastles Holiday Apartments have various room accommodation around $100 per night. They have a web address www.sandcastlesapartments.com.au which has further information. The phone no. 20 66526599.
The Ocean Parade Motel has room around $90 per double and the web address is www.oceanparademotel.com.au Phone no.0266526733.
These prices are only a guide line with subject to change naturally.
A lot of bowlers stay at these places and find them convenient and not overly pricey.
That appears to all for now, and any further info I will keep you posted.
Regards Ken

Message from Blue

Helen and I would like to thank all who contacted us, also I would like to apologise for not replying earlier, and to those who were hoping to contact us on face book/ twitter, like John John, I am not up to date with this modern tech knowledge,

Also thanks to Pom (Adcock) who called in whilst in Brisbane a couple of weeks ago.
Like Glen said the treatment is ongoing, really I never thought I would see the day I had to get some one to mow my lawn
And a thanks to Glen & Dongers as I have been going to call in and see them when I was sorting myself out some thing always used to crop up, It was lovely as Glen still has not changed and he still has humour.
My greatest problem is when I walk any were I get very short of breath, after the radiation they said the tumour had shrunk, I was told earlier I could not have chemo due to certain cell missing from one of the tumours, but as for the tumour on my jaw they were talking of surgery, now they have changed there minds. If there are any symptoms they are going to use radiation.
At present ,now they are sitting tight for next 8 weeks or until changes start. At this time they don’t want to disturb any thing
Thank You:

Blue Hickey

Hickey Report

Yesterday Donger Hodgson and I called around to visit the Hickeys. Both of them looked extremely good and were cheerful within themselves.

Blue is still undergoing ongoing treatment and seems to be on top of things at the moment whilst Helen, who has given up smoking a few months back, (Blue has too) is also looking great. She says that if anyone would like some arthritis though, she has plenty to share around but so far has had no takers on her offer!

John and Shirley Hoare write;

Jenny my love, nice to hear the slump in health has improved and that all is a bit better now. Like the photo! which leads us to ask the question. Has our favourite old bugger finally realised what a great Wife he’s got, loves the attention and and is making the most of it now? Got to watch him Jenny, I sussed him out when we used to play 500 at lunch time back in the Pucka compound igloos. And tell him to stop pulling rank on age (we are all closing on that milestone, quickly); that grin hasn’t changed in about 50 years. Watch him Jenny, he’s a con man from way back. Love to both of you.

Ah youth! You’re in our thoughts and prayers.

Morcom Update

Oops, I somehow managed to post the whole Email I received from Jenny rather than sift through to find the relevant info, so following is an abridged version that at least gives us some vague idea on his progress. Ed
Blue is battling along reasonably well considering what he has been through of late. He is still his bubbly self on his good days and taking one day at a time.
“He gets tired at times which is to be expected from the chemo.  Walks now with the aid of a walking stick (had a walker when he left hospital) and l drop him at ‘the office’ (local TAB and pokie place) for a couple of hours most days where is catches up with his friends.
The oncologist seems to be pleased with how the cancer markers (shows in blood tests) have decreased since Blue was first diagnosed in April ’14.  He will have another CT scan sometime this month. At the last scan in January  the tumour had remained stable.”
He and Jenny often spend time doing day trips, going out to lunches and sightseeing,

The following shot taken yesterday is of Bluey diligently overseeing the lunch making process. It reminds me of someone looking over the Q store counter in 1966 and asking, “You want what??”

An addendum from your editor.
I must add that an Email such as this is refreshing to see as I know what I can insert into the Blog and not have to rely on what I think I heard over a phone conversation.
Any more such updates are more than welcome.
On this note I might add that I was talking to Blue Hickey the other day and things aren’t quite as bad as Blue was lead to believe earlier and he sounds a heck of a lot more positive than before. Hopefully he will send in a report soon so we can pass on the news. (Hint Blue)

Anzac Day 2015

Melbourne.. from Marg Ralph
Melbourne turned on the rain once again for Anzac Day, but this did not stop our intrepid marchers – Brian, Yvonne and Michelle Englund, Rob Hanisch, Des Ralph, Lyn Hatton, and Jenny Hurnell.
Those of us who waited for the adventurers at Bell’s Hotel in South Melbourne were – John Horner (down from Canberra and staying at the Ralph’s),  Bob and Adriana Wilson, Graham and Jenny Morcom, Michelle’s partner in crime Andrew and their two beautiful children Heath and Sassha, our friend Kerrin Andronica, and Marg Ralph.
Once again a pleasant lunch was held, in a private dining room ( we think Management thought we might be un-ruly!!!).

Brisbane.
The march this year was once again well attended but 87 was a bit short in representation in the city march as the suburban marches tended to attract more people this year. Probably due to the 100 years grants that were spread around willy nilly.
Ted Baulch, Donger Hodgson and Glen Hutley were about the only members to turn up and as usual we marched under the banner of the ATA.
Maj Gen David Ferguson led our contingent and just to the left and behind the little female soldier is Donger (wearing a giggle hat).
On my gunjeep is myself, Paul Clements, Ted Baulch and David Schukhraft
