Have known about it for a while, but didn’t mention it as I want to be the only one from good old 87
As the author/editor of InteRACTion, the newsletter of the Corps Association in NSW, I used Pommieâs famous exploit on two occasions in the humour column headed âImpRACTicalitiesâ
In April 1995: One of our blokes got run over by a truck at Nui Dat while we were forming up the convoy for the return run to Vungers. Internal injuries were suspected, so he had to have an exploratory operation at the Field Hospital. Two days later, Matron got a phone call in her office.
âHowâs Private A . . . in Ward 3 getting on?â the caller asked.
âQuite wellâ, says Matron. âHe had surgery two hours after he was admitted, and it revealed that he suffered no damage. He should be back in his unit in three daysâ time. Who is this calling?â
âPrivate A . . . in Ward 3. They tell you nothing in here.â
In the May 1995 edition: Do you recall the gag in our April issue about the Digger who got run over by a truck and had to have exploratory surgery? The punchline in that story came from a recently heard joke, but we painted the scene from real life. One of our drivers was run over at Nui Dat and did undergo exploratory surgery that found nothing wrong with him. And his name did start with an A. The real punchline was that, though he suffered no injury from the vehicle, he was weeks getting over the surgery!
Anyhow, I thought it was funny in 1995.
Fond best wishes to everyone.
